Glue Yarn Balls - great idea for Reception Deco!

I was cruising around Pinterest the other day and saw the coolest idea. I have seen these in pictures before, so I'm sure they are not a novel idea, but had no idea how easy they were to make. And since the color and, theoretically, the shape possibilities are endless, these would make very cute decorations for wedding reception table centerpieces.

Teal/Black Inspiration Board

Happy Monday to all - hope everyone enjoyed their weekends. I know here in the Chicago area, we've been having some mighty fine weather the past week with temps in the 70's & 80's. I personally love these temperatures and wouldn't mind seeing them hang around for awhile. But, knowing Chicago weather, it won't be long before we've got the heavy jackets and boots on, so I will be savoring every second of these wonderful temps while I can get them!

Making my first attempt at an inspiration board and thought I'd start with, well, what I guess I'll call a "crush"...teal/turquoise! I just love this color....it has so much pop against many other hues, making it quite versatile in almost every season. Last week I showed you the turquoise and orange combination, beautiful for fall. This week I was checking out some inspiration colors associated with scrapbooking (my "other" passion) and saw this great ad from Talbot's featuring dark grey suits. They used the teal, black and grey colors for the written labels on the ad - very eye-catching. Bringing those colors together for an upcoming winter wedding or event seems so natural. Teal itself can have a lot of variations to it, and depending on which way you go, you can really create amazing looks. Add a little more black and/or green, you get vintage, old-world sophistication. Go the other direction, adding more white and/or blue, you have a smooth and invigorating color.

Whatever the occasion, whether dark or light, teal is a color for all seasons - have fun with it!

Orange and Turquoise together - WOW!

OK, when I originally saw those two words together, I wasn't quite sure how I'd feel upon actually seeing them - not your usual color combo. But when I saw them paired together in this wedding ensemble, I said WOW! What a winning combination for this fall invitation. The leaves give you the obvious feeling of fall, but the turquoise/teal absolutely POPS next to the orange/rust color and gives it a vibrant, exciting look to this couple's ensemble. And when the two colors overlay, you get just a hit of an olive-green - brilliant!

I used to think there was only one season to our business....Wedding Season. Just like an accountant has Tax Season, there was usually a basic "start" and "end" time to the busiest part of our year, usually March/April thru about Aug/Sept. After September, jobs would still come in and usually for place cards for the weddings we did earlier but it wasn't nearly as busy. Now, I'm finding there are actually several different "seasons" Letter Perfect Design services, allowing us to extending our "busy season" almost year round.

The first of the year usually brings a big rush of invitation purchases, as engaged couples start buying their invitations for upcomig weddings. That is immediately followed by our busiest time, computerized calligraphy for envelope addressing, or the official "Wedding Season" for us. Toward the end of the summer, we are doing just as many place card orders as envelopes as fall brides are nearing their wedding dates. With a lull in the action as the beginning of school approaches, Letter Perfect starts to gear up for Christmas Card envelope printing with Save the Date season right on it's heals, bringing us full circle.

Watercolors....my fav!

Recently, I had the pleasure of printing some place cards for a client and I absolutely fell in love with the design that was printed on the card -

I have always loved watercolors....ever since I saw my first Georgia O'Keefe painting. Her view of the American Southwest and what she could do with a brush and paint just blew me away. Seeing this card convinced me that I needed to attempt to create some watercolor designs and test my capabilities.

I've recently gone back to school to actually get some "book knowledge" on the craft I've been immersed in for the last 5+ years and it's been great. The design above gave me inspiration to try my hand at a watercolor daisy....simple and still very rudimentary, but it's a start.

Trying to control the pen and tablet on a computer is a little more tricky than using paper and pencil - you don't quite get the same fluidity. It doesn't help that my tablet only measures 5"x3.5" but, practice, practice practice! I'm having a blast learning, trying new things. Now that I know watercolor is the medium that I want to explore, I'm eager to continue because I have a focus and a goal. It's always been hard to start working on something because I was never sure where to start. I have the medium, the tools and the ambition....bring it on!

of designing and printing Place Cards, Favor Cards, Menus and Table Cards for the wedding of

Yana and Leonard at the Peninsula Hotel in

Downtown Chicago.

When guests arrived at the reception, they were greeted by a table card arrangement that we created.

The crystals were a nice touch that added to an already elegant wedding.

We also produced table cards that featured creative

WOW! Can't believe an entire summer just flew by!

Well, I guess summer was busier than I thought.....it's been tough (as you can tell) to get in here and write. Been very busy with weddings....even with the economic downturn, many people are still spending money to have the wedding of their dreams. I am grateful I can be a part of each and every one I work on.

I recently worked on a program order for a couple here in town. It was a quick order but I had great fun working on it. I haven't been able to put together too many designs for programs, so the ones I get to do, I relish. It was a simple z-fold with their logo as the centerpiece. This was one of my early versions so it isn't quite as formatted as the one I actually printed up for her, but you get the idea:

I am currently working on a Cherry Blossom design that I hope to incorporate into my Gratuity Envelopes. I should have something to post shortly on that!

On another note.....I am thinking about those affected by Ike. I am in the Chicago area and we have gotten anywhere between 3-10 inches of rain in the last 18 hours. And I know we don't have it nearly as bad as those down in the Texas/Louisiana area. I hope everyone stayed safe and that things return to better times soon in that part of the country. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

New Monogram Gratuity Envelope

Well, it has been so busy around here with weddings, that I haven't had a moment to create anything new for the website. Well, finally a lull (not for long, though!), so I created a new monogram for the gratuity envelopes. It is the Byron Monogram Personalized Gratuity Envelope, something a little different as it isn't quite as fancy as the others, but still stylish. The colors on this design, as well as on my other monograms are totally customizable, so you can have the colors of your wedding if you'd like.

I think one of these days I might just create a picture page where you can choose the type of monogram you'd like on the gratuity envelope; that will keep the page from looking too crowded and give some of the other designs a chance to shine!

I've got some great ideas mapped out and hope to put them all up before the end of summer. I also want to try and put them on my own place cards, menus and maybe programs, for a matching reception set. We'll see how that goes.....

Stamps and Wedding Invitations

Well, the post office has done it again....raised the price of sending something via the USPS. And since their last raise, just over a year ago, things have really gotten complicated in terms of sending things thru the mail. Take your #10 envelope. Just plopped on a .42 cent stamp and you should be good to go....as long as it is 1 oz or less and is less than 1/4" thick. If any of those variables change....say your sending something bulky or multiple papers that make it thicker than normal, they charge additional postage for BOTH the weight increase AND the fact is a "non- machinable" envelope (basically someone has to hand cancel and code it).

So why bring this up? Well, I can't image a more complicated envelope to send thru the PO these days than wedding invitations . With bows, wraps, bling and other items affixed to modern invitations, trying to figure out and budget for the postage is quite the job! Since most people figure out their wedding budgets soon after they get engaged, buying an invitation some 6+ months later can completely throw your budget completely out of whack!

I just recently had a client come by to pick up their envelopes that I had addressed. She gave me some stamps to send some envelopes out that needed to be re-done and I commented on the .90-some cents it was costing her on each envelope. She said "We needed additional postage because the envelope was considered large AND non-machinable. On top of the response envelope stamp, it cost her OVER $1.40 per invitation to mail them. With 169 invitations to mail...well, I think you get the picture.

So, a word to the wise when creating your invitation budget....plan for the most amount of postage possible. Remember to keep in mind that square envelopes, over-sized envelopes (anything larger than 6.25" in height) and over 1/4" thick will trigger additional postage costs. If you end up going with the traditional invitation, at least your budget won't have suffered. But if you go with a fancier, less traditional style of invitation, your budget can allow for it and everyone will be happy!

EARTHQUAKE!!

I'll bet the news services were happy to have exciting news that didn't involve an election or a war! There was a "large" (for the midwest, anyways!) earthquake down in southern Illinois this morning at about 4:36 am. 5.2 so I have read and it could be felt all the way up in Wisconsin down to Georgia. There was minimal obvious damage and no injuries reported but the major cities are still reviewing their infrastructure. I didn't feel it myself, but I have been through a similar occurence about 20 years ago when we had another minor earthquake hit the area. It feels rather strange when you are sitting down on the ground and suddenly the floor moves...very unsettling!

Anyways, quite the way to start a Friday! Now back to our regularly scheduled programming....

Addressing Questions when Inviting Children

I had an great question come up from one of my clients. She was sending her list to me and wanted to know how to address only outer envelopes when inviting children. Believe it or not, this isn't exactly a cut and dry issue. There are options out there, even if some people frown on them as "not etiquette".

First, if the child(ren) are over 18, they should receive their own invitation, even if they are still living at home.

Obviously, if you do have an inner envelope, the names of all those being invited, including children, should be listed there, not on the outer envelope. But if you are only sending an outer envelope, then try some of these approaches:

If you know all the names of the children, list them on the envelope, like such:

Mr. and Mrs. James Smith

Lisa, Aaron and Michael Smith

If there are too many to fit on one line, it is ok to list the additional names on the next line, like such:

Mr. and Mrs. James Smith

Lisa, Aaron, Michael

Susan and Joseph Smith

I have also seen the children receive their own invitation, especially if there are quite a few in the family. This is a pretty rare occurence, but visually speaking, the appearance of the envelope looks much better than having 6+ lines of peoples names and addresses.

One of the very last options is to address the envelope with "and Family". This is very much frowned upon by the etiquette police when addressing wedding envelopes. Since you are going through the work of addressing them, you should spend the time to address it to everyone being invited...which means finding out the names of all the children in the household. But I know how difficult this can be, especially if there will be a large number of families w/children being invited.

Lately, etiquette has been given a back burner on some of these ocassions, becuase it just isn't feasible to do it like we were living in the early 1900's. Times change and so do customs and etiquette. What works for one may not for another, but isn't that why life is so grand?

Well, the first day of Spring was yesterday and today we have a full-blown snow storm happening! Our area is expecting up to 6 inches of snow! Chicago weather never ceases to amaze me. We may be wearing our boots with our Easter finest this weekend!

On another note, I finally finished up on the large wedding reception job I designed from scratch. She wanted the whole thing: programs, table cards, bag tags, menus and stationary to print itineraries. I am so excited about it because it was quite a challenge. Palm trees are not the easiest to create so I had to expand my knowledge of Photoshop and really push the limits of my abilities.

Since I wasn't sure what they were looking for, I created sort of an Art Deco tree....very modern:

Then she said she was looking more for a "true" palm tree, so I came up with this:

Ultimately, when we got the color squared away, and after numerous proofs and changes, the final products came out as such:

Yes, the Bag Tag (the last image) is a different color.....sort of. It is on white paper, but the bags she is putting them on are a much darker blue.....almost a turquoise color as opposed the the more sky blue/robin's egg color in the other items.

It was fun designing all these items....I do hope to do more of it....so bring your ideas!

Wedding Season is in full swing!

Well, wedding season is in full swing here at LPD! I currently have a 5-7 days turn-around time for most envelope orders with longer times for programs and menus. But it is so much fun! It is great to talk to and sometimes meet the wonderful brides and grooms that allow me to create such excitment for their event. I know how much stress planning a wedding can bring; my hope is that I help eleviate some of that anxiety by creating beautiful envelopes that showcase what is inside...an amazing invitation to a magical event!

Spring Break will be upon my household soon, so I hope to be able to post some of the work that I have created for my clients. Stay tune!

Letter Perfect Designs Enters the World of Blogging!

Well, I've finally gone and done it.....I started a blog! I have been hesitating for months now, trying to decide if I could keep up with it. During that time I created some really cool program and menu designs for a few clients.....and it hit me! A blog would be a perfect place to showcase my new creations so everyone can see what I am currently working on.

So, here I am. It might be a bit before I can get the new designs up as I am swamped with addressing work right now, but I will get them up. In the meantime, I can get up my About Me info and other items.
